Mandatory Event for Freshmen

Welcome to night one of the 261 days of your First Year Experience!

Tonight you will make memories with more than 1,000 peers. Begin your 261 day journey to make each day count. You will begin creating lasting bonds with your FYE Peer Mentor, ACAD 101 faculty, and classmates. ACAD 101 sections will meet in an assigned classroom (listed below) before continuing to the West Center.

First Night Finale

Mandatory Event for Freshmen

At the conclusion of First Night Winthrop, make your way to DIGS Campus Green to celebrate your first full night as a Winthrop Eagle. Share food and music with new peers and end the evening looking forward to all that is in store for the 261 days ahead.

Be sure to use the #261FYE to capture each moment of your first-year experience. All new students – freshmen and transfers – are welcome to join the fun!

Staying Safe in Your Campus Community

In our Winthrop community, we have each other's backs. Equip yourself with knowledge and strategies to keep yourself, your friends, and your possessions safe. We will offer safety strategies to protect against theft, identity theft, sexual violence, and other crimes. Learn how to live together safely in our Winthrop community. Please note that each residence hall and commuters are assigned a specific session to attend, listed above.

Rock The Hill

Saturday, August 17 at 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. | Dinkins Parking Lot

Mandatory Event for Freshmen
New Transfer & Adult Students are encouraged to attend.

Join the class of 2023 as you travel to the Winthrop Coliseum to Rock the Hill. Hosted by FYE and our Head Men's Basketball Coach, Pat Kelsey, this pep-rally style event equips you with everything you'll need to cheer on your Eagles to victory—you'll learn chants for the games, be introduced to student section traditions, and get a FREE Rock The Hill t-shirt. 

Please also consider wearing sunscreen as part of the day will be outside. 

Students will meet at 2 p.m. in Dinkins Parking Lot to load buses to the Coliseum for this event. Following Rock The Hill is the New Student Photo.

After Rock The Hill, make sure to follow the Orientation Leaders outside of Winthrop Coliseum to be part of this large scale tradition. All of your new friends in the incoming class will be around you forming the WU!

Mandatory Event for Freshmen

The Student Alumni Council (SAC) will share with you Winthrop's rich history and the distinct characteristics that make Winthrop a university unlike any other. Every new Eagle will pick up a Garnet and Gold traditions book and use it to guide through the session. 
Freshmen will receive their Blue Line Shirts immediately following this session in the Commuter Lounge. Make sure to wear your Blue Line Shirt to Convocation!

Meet Your Peer Mentor

Monday, August 19 at 10:30 - 10:45 a.m. | Winthrop Coliseum

Mandatory Event for Freshmen

All freshmen should meet up with their Peer Mentor at the Coliseum at 10:30 a.m. to prepare for Convocation. Make sure to wear your Blue Line Shirt to Convocation!

Whether you ride, bike, or walk to the Coliseum, make sure to arrive on time. If you need help exploring these options, talk to your Peer Mentor. 
Ways to get to the Coliseum:

  • Walk: The Coliseum is about 1 mile from main campus. Just head straight down Eden Terrace from Winthrop. It's a nice walk through a shady Rock Hill neighborhood. Grab a friend to chat with on the way.
  • Drive: If you have a vehicle, drive to the Coliseum by travelling down Eden Terrace or Cherry Road. See below for parking information.
  • Ride: If you have a friend who has a car, ride with them! Help them to park in the correct place by viewing the information below.
  • Bike: Ride your bike or one of the yellow bikes from Rock Hill's bike share program. There are 2 bike hubs on campus: in front of Richardson/Wofford and in front of DIGS.
  • Take the Bus: Make your way to the Coliseum by taking one of the My Ride Buses. Please note that this is not the quickest way to the Coliseum, and you are expected to be on time.

Parking at the Coliseum: 

  • All students should park on the west side of the Coliseum, across from the Tennis Complex.
  • All faculty/staff should park on the east side of the Coliseum.

Convocation is a tradition dating to the presidency of Winthrop's founder, David Bancroft Johnson, and is held the first day of classes each new academic year. Today, President Daniel F. Mahony convenes members of the 134th new student class of freshmen and incoming transfer students to provide them with an official welcome to the campus community.

Mandatory Event for New Transfer & Adult Students

Assemblies are based on Academic College. If you're unsure where your major fits, ask your Peer Mentor or TOLM.

College of Arts & Sciences
Location: Tillman Hall Auditorium 
Dean Takita Sumter will welcome students to the College of Arts & Science (CAS) and discuss the distinctive qualities of CAS programs. Each student will then meet with faculty and students in his or her major.

College of Business Administration
Location: Whitton Auditorium, Carroll Hall 
Dean P.N. Saksena will welcome students and highlight the programs and goals of the College of Business. Department chairs will discuss the variety of professional development activities that make students successful. Students will then meet with their advisors/mentors and department representatives.

College of Education
Location: Richardson Ballroom, DIGS 
Dean Jennie Rakestraw will welcome students and share the mission and goals of the Richard W. Riley College of Education. The session will be followed by separate meetings, by major, with faculty and department chairs.

College of Visual & Performing Arts
Location: Johnson Hall Theatre 
Dean Jeffrey Bellantoni will welcome Visual & Performing Arts majors as they meet with the faculty and department chairs in their specific area of study to discuss program goals and upcoming events for the academic year.

University College
Location: Tuttle Dining Room, McBryde Hall 
Dean Gloria Jones will welcome students to University College and discuss the resources available to help student make informed decisions about majors.

It's time to get to work! Start the semester off strong. Use your resources. Ask for help when you need to.

You've got this!

Fall classes begin Monday, August 19 at 5 p.m. If you are registered for a class scheduled earlier than 5 p.m. on Mondays, that class won't meet until the next classtime (for instance, the first class would actually be Wednesday, August 21 if it is a Monday/Wednesday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday class). If you have questions about when your class meets, reach out to your Orientation Leader, Transfer Orientation Leader & Mentor, Peer Mentor, or Resident Assistant.
