Convocation & Convocation Picnic (Monday)

Mandatory Event for Freshmen and New Transfer Students
Upperclassmen are encouraged to attend.

ConvocationWinthrop's Convocation is one of our proudest traditions. It serves as the university's official welcome to new students and celebrates academic excellence and cognitive curiosity.

As a Winthrop tradition that began with the university's first president, David Bancroft Johnson, Convocation is a ceremony always held before classes begin at the start of each academic year. Today, President Daniel F. Mahony convenes members of the 134th new student class of freshmen and incoming transfer students to provide them with an official welcome to the campus community. Winthrop alumni continue to relate how their time at Winthrop, including Convocation, has shaped their experience after graduation.

Be sure to attend the 2019 Convocation on Monday, August 19, 2019 to experience this cherished tradition. New students should wear their Blue Line shirts!

Consider wearing sunscreen as part of the day will be outside.

Parking at the Coliseum:

  • All students should park on the west side of the Coliseum, across from the Tennis Complex.
  • All faculty/staff should park on the east side of the Coliseum.

The Blue Line (Monday)

Mandatory Event for Freshmen and New Transfer Students

Blue LineEstablished in 1895 by President Johnson, the Blue Line is among Winthrop's most cherished traditions.

Originally, the female students were led in two lines down Oakland Avenue where they could attend any one of the many churches along the street. The procession of students dressed in blue and white uniforms was led by the President on the first Sunday of the academic year and eventually became known as the “Blue Line." When the uniform policy ended, the tradition lost its identity, but in 1983 President Lader revived the Blue Line.

Today, the President leads the Convocation procession of Convocation participants wearing Winthrop Blue Line t-shirts out of Convocation and to the Convocation Picnic.
Snap a picture as you walk with your fellow Eagles to the picnic in your Blue Line t-shirt on Monday, August 19, 2019!

About Cultural Events:

Winthrop University strives to offer its students a setting in which they can mature culturally, as well as intellectually. In an effort to provide a well-rounded education, Winthrop has a cultural events policy. The purpose of the cultural events requirement is to establish and foster a life-enriching pattern of cultural involvement.

All students are required to attend Cultural Events as a graduation requirement.

By attending cultural events, a student experiences firsthand the diverse offerings of culture and artistic expression found in a community.
