Graduate Student Staff

Renea Norcia

Graduate Associate for Family Programs
Pursuing Master of Education in Counseling & Development
Winthrop University
Hometown: Lancaster, South Carolina
About Me: I am pursuing a career in School Counseling, and I love working with students of all ages! In my free time, I love to run and watch HGTV, and I have a passion for interior decorating. I also consider skincare to be so important and am fascinated with all aspects of that!
Advice for New Students: Step out of your comfort zone! I'm convinced that the best growth happens when you're uncomfortable. College is a wonderful place to do this while taking advantage of so many opportunities. Also, utilize your professors! Ask them questions, and then ask some more! Finally, remember that mistakes don't define you - the way you respond and move on does!
Fun Fact: I love to run, and I hope to run the Boston Marathon one day!

Gaylen Rivers

NODA Graduate Intern for Families
Pursuing Master of Education in Higher Education & Student Affairs
Northern Illinois University
Hometown: Maywood, Illinois
About Me: I am a first year masters student at Northern Illinois University and a Graduate Research Assistant at their Center for Black Studies. In my free time, I love to read, bowl, and take road trips. I also enjoy going to NBA games and Broadway musicals.
Advice for New Students: During my first semester/year of college, I struggled with feeling alone and was not sure that I made the right choice. I found community through my involvement and it opened doors for me that I never thought possible. My advice to new students is to step out of your comfort zone and become involved at Winthrop!
Fun Fact: I have never been to South Carolina, so I am very excited for this summer!

Brian Trager

NODA Graduate Intern for Students
Pursuing Master of Higher Education - College Student Affairs Leadership at Grand Valley State University
Hometown: McBain, Michigan
About Me: I grew up in a very small town in Northern Michigan. I love playing sports, spending time outdoors, and I am a die-hard Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and Detroit Pistons fan. I spent three summers as an Orientation Leader at GVSU, and I fell in love with building connections with students and serving as a resource for them. I am thrilled to be able to bring my passion for helping students to Winthrop!
Advice for New Students: In my first year as a college student, I struggled with anxiety. Learning how to balance academics with my social life was a difficult adjustment for me. I was able to overcome these struggles by utilizing resources on my campus and building connections with faculty and staff.
Fun Fact: I am a triplet, and have two awesome sisters, Laurie and Lisa!
