Please see below for a statement from the Model UN Program about the recent cancellation of this year's Model UN Conference:

Due to ongoing concern with the Covid-19 virus and out of an abundance of caution, senior leadership at Winthrop University has decided to cancel all campus events from March 23-through April 3 and move to remote instruction during the same two week period following our Spring Break next week. As a result, this year’s MUN conference, unfortunately, has to be cancelled. We do not anticipate being able to hold the conference at a later date this semester due to all sorts of logistical concerns as well as consideration over everyone’s well-being.

We will be in touch regarding (1) refunding the fees you have paid or (2) holding the fees as registration for Model UN 2021 whichever is easiest for your high schools. Since student leaders have worked so hard this year, and this year’s theme, speaker, program, and special committee will not have the opportunity to be implemented, our plan is to implement all of these aspects into the 45th MUN Conference in 2021. Your students have worked hard, too, so perhaps you can even retain the same countries next year!  In addition, we do plan to conduct the Wednesday evening college-level debate sometime after Winthrop resumes face to face classes in April. Our plan is to conduct this using FB Live so your high school teams could still watch live and have an engaging interactive experience, perhaps weighing in on which delegates they think deserve to win the collegiate awards.

We are very sorry to cancel our 44th Model UN Conference, but know this tradition will continue next year with wonderful partners such as yourselves.   Please email or call with any concerns and information will continue to be provided as it is made available to us.

Thanks for your support through the years,

Dr. Chris Van Aller

Model United Nations Director
