Message from the Executive Director

April 2021

Lori Tuttle

Alumni and Friends,

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Winthrop faculty and staff have shown extraordinary resilience and commitment in their service to our campus community. We invite alumni, students, parents and community members to share an electronic note of thanks with a faculty or staff member who has made a positive difference in your life or the lives of students. Is there someone who has brightened your day, gone the extra mile or affirmed you in some way? Let them know how special they are to you! All notes received will be shared with intended recipients the week of May 3 as Winthrop prepares to celebrate its in-person spring Commencement ceremonies. To share a note of gratitude, please click here. Submissions will be accepted through Sunday, May 2.

The 18th Annual Winthrop Official Ring Ceremony was held in McBryde Hall on Sunday, April 18. This event is one of Winthrop's signature traditions and an opportunity for students who have purchased their Winthrop ring to be honored. The ceremony was small this year to be in compliance with COVID-19 protocols, but we were thankful to be able to host it in-person to celebrate our students. The event was shared live on the Alumni Association’s Facebook page, but if you missed it you can watch here. Congratulations to the 2020-21 ring recipients!

Winthrop Virtual Alumni Book Club members, you are invited to a live Q&A Author Talk with Matt Haig, author of our current book “The Midnight Library,” on Thursday, May 20 from 1-2 p.m. EST. Haig will discuss the path that led him to write “The Midnight Library,” as well as answer our Virtual Alumni Book Club questions. There is no cost to participate. Additionally, the event will be recorded for those who were unable to attend. In order to watch the event, either live or recorded, book club members will need to register. Ahead of the event, submit your questions for Haig! Click here to visit our Ask the Author topic and let us know what you’d like to ask him! If you would like to join the Winthrop Virtual Alumni Book Club, visit

The Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections has two oral history opportunities for alumni. “Oral History Project: Being LGBTQIA+ at Winthrop” is aimed towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community associated with Winthrop. Volunteers include Winthrop alumni, current students, staff, faculty and former employees. Interviews are being recorded to upload to the Pettus Archives’ Oral History section of Digital Commons at a later date. For more information, contact Pettus Archives or check out the library’s blog. “The September 11, 2001 Project” will feature an exhibit marking the 20th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001. Archives is looking for anyone in the Winthrop community who would like to record an interview about their thoughts. For more information on either project, contact the Archives at or 803/323-2334.

Finally, check out our new Facebook profile frames now available and show your garnet and gold pride! Search “Winthrop,” “Winthrop University” or “Winthrop Alumni” when adding a frame to your Facebook profile pic.

Class Reunion Virtual Socials

April 27-May 25, 7 p.m., via Zoom
Join us for virtual reunion celebrations for class years ending with a ’0 or ’5! Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 in 2020, Winthrop deferred all reunion gatherings planned for November 2020 to spring of 2021 in hopes of being able to gather in person to celebrate. As much as we were hoping to celebrate in person, it is clear that safely gathering on campus will not be possible due to continued social distancing guidelines and COVID-19 protocols campus has in place. The Alumni Association does not want to miss the opportunity to celebrate alumni with a class year that ends with a ’0 or ’5.  Enjoy a fun game of Winthrop Trivia specific for your class year and reminisce with fellow classmates about your fondest Winthrop memories. Register below for your class reunion to secure your spot! For questions or assistance about Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, please e-mail the Alumni Association at or call 800/578-6545.
